Propane

One thing I want to avoid was running out of propane. To tell the truth I have never tried to have the bottles filled while they were still on the trailer. I don’t think it’s possible because when I took them off to have them filled the guy stood them upright and when I questioned him about that he said they had to be upright or he could not refill them. On the 3124KS the bottles are horizontal.

Now I know that those bottles will last a long time when full, but it is a bit of a hassle to unbolt them every time you have the refill one. So what I did was get the “Sturgi-Stay” (made by Sturgis, images 1426, 1427) propane port that connects onto your main propane line. This allows you to hook up an auxiliary propane bottle (like the one you have on your BBQ grill) with a quick connect hose. That way you can carry an extra bottle and won’t have to move your RV if you run low on propane, you just change out the auxiliary bottle and take it to be refilled or hook up another full one.

If you look at the Sturgi-Stay (it’s the “L” shaped brass fitting with a blue valve control lever on the side ….. image 1426) you will see two access ports. The one with the blue valve control lever (that faces the front of the trailer) is the port where you can hook up an auxiliary propane bottle. The port that is pointing straight upward (with the large brass cap on it) is a port where you can hook up a propane hose to power an accessory (like a lantern…or a gas grill etc….).

The whole unit is mounted on the right side of  your propane gas regulator where one of your tank hoses would go. Then the tank hose that you unscrewed from your regulator, is screwed into the Sturgi-Stay unit. This way the Sturgi-Stay unit is between the right side trailer tank and the regulator.

To use the Sturgi-Stay all you do is make sure the tanks on your trailer are turned off. Then, using a quick connect propane gas hose, you plug the quick connect end into the Sturgi-Stay unit. Make sure the valve is off on the Sturgi-Stay unit. Next, connect the hose to you auxiliary propane tank and turn the tank and the Sturgi-Stay valves on. The auxiliary tank is now feeding propane to your trailer thru the regulator. Be sure and chain or lock down your auxiliary tank as they have a habit of rolling away. I have a “Bolt” cable lock just for this purpose.

So now if my trailer runs low on propane, I can simply hook up another bottle without having to unbolt the ones on the trailer…..less hassle…. and….simple…like I like it!
